Tactics
After last week's debacle at Tannadice we have possibly an even more important game on Saturday against Hamilton. I felt last week that the tone for the match was set by Gary Locke's decision to play 2 holding midfielders.
It sent out a message of caution which handed the initiative to Dundee United so this week with 3 points being vital I am going for a more offensive line-up. A 4-3-1-2 formation with Magennis in partnership with Boyd up front. Josh running the channels and holding the ball up allowing Kris to do what he does best in the box.
GK: Jamie MacDonald
Not much else to add that's not been said already. I remember being surprised by one journalist in per-season picking out Jamie as the best signing of the summer. Doubt if any other player as been as important to their club as he has.
RB: David Syme
Not done much wrong since coming into the side. Looks a good defender but right-back is a problem we haven't solved for many a year. Deserves a chance at it, although I hope fans remember he is a centre-half and ultimately is judged long-term in his normal position. Will need a bit of protection if Dougie Imrie plays down that side.
CB: Conrad Balatoni
Good steady player most of the time for us but I'm still not sure who his best partner is. A fully-fit Mark Connolly would always be in my team but time will tell if they work as a pair.
CB: Stuart Findlay
Tough one this. He was at fault for a few of the goals last week but was out of position. Ashcroft can be great or dreadful so I've went with Stuart to give a bit of balance on the left of central defence.
LB: Kevin McHattie
Wasn't too keen on him at Hearts but has done alright for us so far. Will be looking for decent service from him into the front 2 but he must remember he is a defender first and foremost.
CM: Craig Slater
One of the first names on the team-sheet for me at the moment. I would give him the freedom to take the game to Accies or sit a bit more depending how things are going. Would love to see this boy in a good Killie midfield.
LM: Steven Smith
If fit after coming off early last week, if not it'll have to be Jamie Hamill. How we've arrived at this point in Gary's reign where the only genuine contenders for this position are 2 full-backs who couldn't get a game in the Championship last season is beyond me.
RM: Greg Kiltie
The wee man is playing well now that his contract is sorted. Maybe would have to play slightly deeper than normal to offer a bit of protection to Syme but he's fit and mobile enough to get up the park and supply the front 2 as well as providing his own goal threat.
CAM: Adam Frizzell
Looks a great prospect and would play him in the hole just behind the front 2. Very important role but I reckon he could play there. Thought about playing Higgy there but he seems to be a bit hit or miss at the moment. Could take over if the wee man is struggling.
CF: Josh Magennis
The improvement in Josh this season has to partly be down to working with Boyd. Therefore they should have a fair enough understanding of each other's game to make the partnership work on the park.
CF: Kris Boyd
I did swither over playing Kris but I would rather start with a positive attitude than him coming on if we're struggling which usually results in punts up the park. Let Josh do his work out the box because there's still nobody more likely to take any chances going than him.
By the way I would have had Boydie starting with the U20s every week if he's not starting first-team games. He needs to play to keep his sharpness up.
Plenty of options to change that team if it's not going well (4-2-3-1 etc) but if we get enough of the ball I reckon that this team has more of a goal threat.
